21/12/2006 - New ARBURG Moulding Machines
McLaren Plastics Limited has enhanced its flexible approach to meeting customer requirements following its recent purchase of two ARBURG GOLDEN EDITION injection moulding machines.
The company has evolved from manufacturing pipe clips for plumbing applications, to more technically advanced work, particularly for the electronics and packaging industries.
The company is also an established supplier to the packaging industry, producing plastic mouldings in most thermoplastic materials for tube closures in many sizes and designs as well as nozzles and plungers for mastic cartridges.
In response to the increasing industry trend for volume manufacture of moulded products to be transferred to the Far East, McLaren Plastics has recognised the need to develop strong relationships with their customers, assisting in design for assembly projects and supporting small volume, rapid turnaround orders.
Neil McLaren, joint Managing Director of McLaren Plastics Limited, commented: “Our success in reversing this trend has resulted from a focus on the smaller volume product runs, for example with business machines such as electronic data terminals for the catering trade and cash counting machines – we produce seven or eight components for each machine and supply these for 5-10,000 units per year – orders that would not be considered viable by manufactures in the Far East. We have a strong local client base and are able to respond quickly to customer modifications and delivery requirements without the premium that would be charged by our overseas competitors.
“Often companies don’t have the knowledge or the time to design or source parts – this is where we add value as a supplier and as a partner. Again, this is central to our competitive advantage.
“We have the facility to produce a huge variety of plastic components on our machines, which range from 22 to 270 tons clamp force capacity. With a complement of 23 machines, 33 well motivated and experienced staff providing a round-the-clock operation assisted by an advanced in-house tool room with maintenance facilities, we are able to cater to a diverse market.
“Our machines are predominantly from the ARBURG stable, having recently commissioned a 50 ton and 150 ton GOLDEN EDITIONs that are proving to be a tremendous asset in terms of investment potential. We are happy to acknowledge that both reliability and functionality are key hallmarks of the ARBURG brand.
“The operators are impressed with the user-friendliness of the SELOGICA touch-screen control, which takes a remarkably short time to understand and operate – very much a ‘plug and play’ system, with all the inherent quality aspects one would expect from this internationally recognised supplier.
“Since we bought our first ARBURG machine in 1984, a strong bond has developed between our two companies. McLaren is a family owned business and we share our values and philosophy with the ARBURG ‘family’.
“Our ongoing policy to maintain and utilise the ISO 14000 quality management system to the full requires us to continually update and replace plant and equipment with ‘greener’ more energy efficient machines. The ARBURG machines we now utilise are not only first-class moulding machines, but also reduce waste and use less energy than our previous machines.
“The after-sales service is second to none, with a very responsive back up service when required.
The Allrounder GOLDEN EDITION was launched globally in February this year at a special ceremony to celebrate ARBURG’s 50 years of injection moulding machine manufacture.
This model represents a high specification, very competitively priced, state-of-the art hydraulic machine with a selectable list of options, thanks to the latest ARBURG technology. It is equipped as standard with the latest touch screen control, the SELOGICA “direct”.
Colin Tirel, Managing Director, ARBURG Limited, commented: “We have developed a strong partnership with McLaren Plastics Limited, based on a thorough understanding of their requirements and products. As the company grows, we are delighted to continue to provide quality service, advice and assistance.
“The GOLDEN EDITIONs and other ARBURG machines have enhanced McLaren’s capacity to deliver their strategic objective of rapid response batch production and design input to a variety of clients covering a huge range of products.
“The GOLDEN EDITION combines versatility and simplicity, the ideal combination for a moulder such as McLaren. The machine is well suited for prototype manufacture and iterative design work. We are delighted that ARBURG has made such a lasting impact with McLaren – we look forward to a continued long term and developing relationship and wish Neil and his team every success for the future.”
